Math is...

Math is everything! You use math in your life daily. Sometimes you don't realize that you are using it but you are. You use math when your shopping. You have to figure out how much a item is if it is on sale for a certain percent off. Also you have to figure out the tax amount of the item your purchasing. People use math while buying a car. When you need a loan for car you have to know the interest rate and see how much you will be paying per month. There is also interest when you have money in your bank account. While your money just sits there your making more money off of it. When you go out to dinner and you give the waitress a tip you have to decide what percent of the bill you are going to give. You use percents a lot in your daily life without noticing. Many jobs use math weather your a carpenter or a accountant.

Kites

In class we made kites out of paper. My predictions were that the lighter the kite was the better it would fly. Another prediction was that if the kite was flat it would fly. I belive that kites fly better with the material there made of than making tham out of paper. Paper is too heavy, unless the wind is very strong. The stronger the wind is the better your kite will fly. When we went to fly the kites it turned out my kite didnt fly. Also, wind is a big part in flying kites and there was not that much wind the day we flew our kites. Kites fly when there is high pressure under the kite and low pressure above the kite. A kite flys in the direction that the wind is going in.

Water Tank
In class we did an experiment which demonstrated density. We had a tank filled with water in it. First we put a divider in the middle of the tank. One side had blue food coloring and salt. The other side had just yellow food coloring. When we took out the divider i predicted that the yellow would rise and the blue would sink. My prediction was extremely close, the yellow raised and the blue sank but there was also a green strip of water in between the two colors. The blue sank because it is more dense, food coloring and salt add density to the water. The yellow raised since it only had food coloring and it was less dense. Next we quartered the tank. We put red food coloring in the water. The red section of water contains food coloring and salt because we mixed the blue and yellow water and put some red food coloring in that. My hypothesis was that the colors would all mixed together. My hypothesis was wrong, what actually happen was that the yellow was on top than a thin line of green, next was red, than another thin shade of green and on bottom was the blue. Lastly we quartered the water tank again and salted it again. I predicted that the slimy green would sink with the blue. The slimy green went to the bottom, than it was blue than red and on top was the yellow.

Social Studies

Cell phones. I believe that cell phones are the best advancement in technology. Now that we have cell phones you can call people whenever. Cell phones make life a lot easier. If your running late to something or you have to go somewhere you can just call someone and tell them. If we didn't have cell phones life would be a lot harder. People could get lost or people might not know where someone is. Cell phones also have many extras too. You can just carry around a cell phone but you can also take pictures with it or text or even go on the Internet. Cell phones are very important to life today.

South Kingstown Mathlete had their first Quest Competition. It was an huge success with 75 third graders from all four elementary schools. The students were put into mixed teams allowing students from Matunuck, Peace Dale, Wakefield, and West Kingston to work together in the competition. The first four rounds of fast questions went quickly. The teams shared their responses on whiteboards to the audience of family, friends, teachers, and judges. The competition let the students show what they have been learning in math. The final round was a tie breaking round. Students had to work on extended problem solving task. The lime green team won the competition.

Jamie Harshman and eighth grader at Sebring Middle School logged into the competition Friday at his home for five hours. In his best one-minute stretch, he answered 32 questions on his way to about 4,500 correct answers half-way through the competition.The quota of 50 million correct answers from a million students around the world was reached after 12 1/2 hours. The event actually was 48 hours long. It ended 6 a.m. Thursday with more than 182 million correct answers recorded. When a student goes onto the World Math Day Web site they are brought into a small group of other students in the world to complete a series of math problems in a two-minute period. As the students race to finish the same problems, a bar graph shows the progress of each student in the competition. The competition is for kindergartners through high schoolars to compete with other students at their own grade level. World Math Day's Web site and event was created by 3P Learning. That is an Australian company that created an online math program. Last year no one in the United States was ranked in the top 100. This year two United State students finished in the top 100 . Trophies will go to the student who correctly answered the one-millionth problem, two-millionth problem, etc

Do snowflakes contain bacteria?

Most snow and rain forms in cold conditions high in the sky.Under most conditions, the moisture needs something to cling to in order to condense. Now the so-called nucleators turn out to be bacteria that can affect plants. In some studies 85% of the neclei's were bacteria. The most common place where the snow had bacteria was France than Montana than Yukon. Also, bacteria in the snow was also found in Antarctica. In Louisiana there was bacteria found in the rain. Scientist are trying to eliminate the bacteria but they are worried that if they do there will be less rain and snow. the bacteria is very effective in weather which is about a few degrees below freezing.
